Make no mistake, Basil felt he owed Ouida everything and was convinced his career would have floundered without her. Of all their time together, it was during this period that they were at their happiest. Life was good for the Rathbones, but as had been the case on numerous occasions in Basil’s life, tragedy was just around the corner, and on this occasion it would be in the form of the horrific death of Jack Miltern and a bizarre episode almost immediately after the accident which, if Basil recalled the whole episode correctly, was inexplicable.
He recalled the horror in his autobiography:
We had started out on this day for our usual walk with the dogs, a little later than usual. The sun was setting. It was a beautiful evening. Ouida had come running to the garden gate to call us back to go with her in the car for a drive to watch the sun set into the Pacific. But we had gone just too far to hear her calling – or had we? How much of destiny is there in events such as these? This was the day and the hour and destiny was not to be denied by anything as fragile as the human will to live. The sky was bright and clear – an eternity above us. The dogs were soon hunting, and Jack and I followed the paths we had trod so often together while Ouida jumped into her car and drove off to the ocean. Jack had Leo, Bunty and Cullum. I had Moritza and Happy and Judy. The traffic was heavy on Los Feliz Boulevard as we waited to cross the road to our house. Suddenly, with no obvious reason, Jack walked out into the road. I screamed at him to wait and a moment later he and his three dogs were hit by a passing car. I saw them, all four of them, in the air, and a few seconds later, four motionless bodies lay in the road, some ten to fifteen yards distant. The cars didn’t stop, they just slowed down and went around, the motionless bodies. I was powerless to move. I yelled at the passing traffic for help and at last a car stopped beside Jack, who was bleeding profusely.
